Chapter Thirteen

Yasmin

Iwas lying in bed, my phone still clutched in my hand. The bright screen illuminated my face as I re-read the text messages from Kim. My heart fluttered at the thought of seeing her on Monday. I longed for her touch, her scent, and the way she made me feel alive.

But then, a familiar knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. I quickly shoved my phone under my pillow and pulled the covers up to my chin, pretending to be asleep. I heard the door creak open and the sound of footsteps approaching my bed.

“Rise and shine, dear!” Auntie Munnie’s voice boomed. “I brought you some breakfast in bed.”

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes, knowing that Auntie Munnie’s idea of breakfast in bed was just an excuse to snoop around my room. But I couldn’t resist the smell of freshly baked croissants, fruit, and strong coffee, so I begrudgingly sat up. When I did, my phone clattered to the floor. Auntie Munnie scooped it up, glanced at the screen, and plopped herself down on the edge of the bed.

“So, who were you texting?” Auntie Munnie was persistent, and I knew she wouldn’t leave until she got an answer.

“Just a friend,” I finally admitted, trying to sound nonchalant.

“A friend, huh?” Auntie Munnie raised an eyebrow. “A boyfriend, perhaps?”

“Auntie Munnie, please,” I forked a piece of mango. “The ink isn’t even dry on my divorce papers. Give me a break.”

“Why did you divorce Ali?” Auntie stood and began pacing the length of my bedroom. “He’s one of the wealthiest men in California, and his parents and yours were all devastated when they found out. Our families have been marrying each other for generations. Your grandparents are probably rolling around in their graves.”

I love this woman with all my heart, but right now I wanted to slap her. Growing up, Auntie Munnie had been like a second mother to me. But I was an adult now, and if she didn’t leave me alone, I might say something we’d both regret.

Auntie Munnie continued to pace, listing off eligible Pakistani bachelors in Los Angeles. “You are quite a catch, Yasmina, and I know of several eligible men. There’s Naveed. His family owns a chain of successful restaurants. And don’t forget about Asad, he’s the CEO of a tech company and quite handsome.”

I sighed, not in the mood to entertain Auntie Munnie’s matchmaking efforts. “Auntie, I appreciate your concern, but I am not ready for another relationship right now.”

She stopped her pacing and turned to face me with a stern look. “Yasmin, you need to think about your future. You can’t rely on just your job for security. A good marriage will provide stability and children.”

I felt my patience wearing thin as she continued ranting about the importance of marriage in our culture. It was true that Auntie Munnie cared for me and only wanted what she thought was best for me, but right now, her meddling was suffocating.

“Enough!” I finally snapped, startling Auntie Munnie with my outburst.
